The Magnificat Prayer

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.

The Magnificat Prayer Meaning

The Magnificat prayer is a beautiful and powerful prayer recited by Mary, the mother of Jesus, in response to the greetings of her cousin Saint Elizabeth, on the occasion of Mary’s visitation to the then-pregnant mother of John the Baptist.

What does magnificat mean? Magnificat means “magnifies” and the Magnificat Prayer is said to mean “My Soul Magnifies the Lord”. It is also a canticle (a hymn or song with lyrics from biblical or holy texts) and is also commonly known as the Song of Mary or Canticle of Mary.

The prayer is a reminder of the joy that comes from living a life of faith and of the power of God’s mercy and grace.

It reminds us that no matter how lowly we may be, God looks upon us with favor, and that He is always with us, ready to lift us up and give us strength when we are in need.

We can put our trust in God, knowing that He will never abandon us in our time of need.

Who Wrote The Magnificat Prayer

The Magnificat prayer is taken from the Gospel of Saint Luke 1:46–55 in the New Testament of the Bible. It was uttered by Mary, the mother of Jesus, in response to Saint Elizabeth’s amazement at her cousin Mary’s visitation.

As Mary arrived at her cousin’s house, she greeted her, and Elizabeth exclaimed in a loud voice (as written in Luke 1:42-45):

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

And in response to Elizabeth’s words, Mary uttered the Magnificat as a powerful testament to her faith in God, and to her joy and gratitude for the blessings of His love.

The Magnificat prayer is a prayer of praise and thanksgiving for all of the gifts we have been blessed with and a reminder of the joy that comes from living a life of faith.

Through her words, Mary gives us a beautiful example of faith and hope and reminds us of the power of trusting and believing in God.
