I just learned about the Sacred Heart of Jesus Enthronement a few months back while reading the book 12 Promises of the Sacred Heart by Emily Jaminet. And we finally enthroned our home last December 26, 2021 (during the Feast Day of the Holy Family).

I will write a separate review of this book soon to let you know more about it. It’s a very good book, especially for Catholics like me who are not familiar yet with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, its history, and devotion.

This can be one of the activities that you can do with your kids during Lent.

What Is The Sacred Heart of Jesus Enthronement in the Home?

The Sacred Heart Enthronement of Jesus in the home is an act of welcoming Jesus into your home as King, Savior, and Friend. At the same time, it is a conscious decision to place Jesus at the center of your life and home.

The Sacred Heart enthronement is not only for the homes, but also for schools, workplaces, business establishments, and parishes with the same concept of welcoming Jesus to be King, Savior, and Friend and inviting Him to be the center of these places.

How to Do the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Home?

Though the enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the home seems to be a complicated process (as I thought before), it’s actually not. Welcome His Heart has a guide on how to do it in 5 easy steps:

1. Choose a Sunday. – We have to do the enthronement on a Sunday of our choice and we are advised to attend Mass together as a family, as much as possible. My family decided to do it on December 26, 2021, which was also the feast of the Holy Family.

2. Select a Sacred Heart Image and Ask your Priest to Bless it. – Find a Sacred Heart image that you like, print it out depending on your preferred size, and frame it.

I spent days looking for Sacred Heart of Jesus images on Etsy, Google, and other places. It took time because I also want to find a matching image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary with the same design and style.

We finally found the perfect images after asking for help from my husband! If you like these images for your home, too, you can download, print, and frame them for your Sacred Heart of Jesus home enthronement.

We saved the photos on a USB, brought them to the photo shop for printing, and we also ordered frames. They were so kind to put the photos on the frame, so they were ready to hang when we claimed them.

TIP:

Include your husband in the process, so you can discuss which images suit better for your house.

Most importantly, let your Parish Priest bless the image. We went to Mass on December 26 for the Feast of the Holy Family and we asked our priest and confessor, Mossen Antoni, to bless the images. (God bless his soul, it was the last day that we saw him because we got a message informing us that he passed away on January 12, 2022).

3. Establish a Prominent Place in Your Home. – Decide where to hang the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It should be in a prominent place in your home where all members and even visitors can easily see it. The garage or an almost hidden part of the home is not valid.

We decided to put the image of the Sacred Heart along with the Immaculate Heart of Mary below the Crucifix which is hung on the wall of the living room, above the fireplace.

We prepared the area the day before the enthronement by installing the screws, making sure that the frames are centered and on the same level, etc.

4. Prepare Your Hearts. – We have to prepare our hearts before the enthronement ceremony by reciting the prayers in the booklet (that you can download from the Welcome His Heart site), three days before the enthronement.

5. Enthronement Sunday. – This is the day when you finally enthrone the Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home. Follow the guide from the Welcome His Heart site. We made the enthronement right after coming home from Mass. We were supposed to try inviting Mossen Antoni for the enthronement, but due to the COVID-19 protocol, we decided to just skip it.

Then it was followed by a special lunch that my husband prepared. It is suggested that a little feast among family and friends be prepared after the home enthronement, but due to COVID-19, this is not encouraged at the moment.

Sacred Heart of Jesus History & Devotion

The Sacred Heart, also known as the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, is considered one of the most well-known and widely practiced Catholic devotions, according to Wikipedia. My maternal grandparents are both devotees of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and many residents of the village in the Philippines where I came from.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is recognizing and honoring Jesus’ great love for us as symbolized by His heart. The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on the 3rd Friday after Pentecost.

The devotion was started in the 1670s when Jesus appeared many times to a nun in France named St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. According to The Basilica:

Through these visions, He told her how He wished to be honored with the symbol of His heart, asking for the faithful to make amends for any wrongdoing they had done, frequently take Communion, and observe the Holy Hour. In 1856, the devotion was added to the church calendar by Pope Pius IX.
