Hello Mamas, are you struggling in the humility department, just like me? Today I want to share with you the Litany of Humility Prayer that you can download and print for free, so, you can read it everyday.

I will also include a free printable Litany of Humility prayer card as an option, so you can print and carry it with you.

Here’s the complete Litany of Humility:

Lord Jesus, meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Who Wrote the Litany of Humility?

There are actually different versions of the Litany of Humility, but the version posted above is considered the most popular version of the prayer that was written by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val (or Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val y Zulueta), who was the Cardinal Secretary of State of the Holy See under Pope St. Pius X.

Why Should We Pray the Litany of Humility?

The Litany of Humility is a Catholic prayer intended to help those who are struggling with the sins of pride, so, they can learn and be granted the virtue of humility through this prayer.

This litany is not recited during liturgical services of the Catholic Church, but recited in private, in a prayer group, or in a home setting with family members.

To be honest, I only learned about it yesterday, while I was looking for some other Catholic topics. That’s why I want to share it with you, just in case you haven’t heard of this prayer, yet, like me.

And I believe that stumbling into this wonderful prayer was not an accident, because God knows that I needed it.

God wants to help me control my natural inclinations for love of material goods that are only giving me false security.

Instead, He wants my restless self to learn this beautiful prayer, so that slowly, I may learn the difficult virtue of humility. And to make me realize that the inordinate love of attention is not good at all.

How to Pray the Litany of Humility?

We can start praying the Litany of Humility by reciting it once a day. Preferably in the morning, so, we can start our day by asking God to guide and remind us of our goal to not give in to our human nature of being prideful. We can end the prayer with one Our Father, One Hail Mary, and a Glory Be.

Do you have other specific prayers that you pray consistently?

My husband and I are currently doing the 9 first Friday devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (We are on our 6th first Friday this month of May) and I am also doing the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, though not consistently.

What are the Catholic prayer cards that you have?

I have a prayer booklet, a photo of Mother of Perpetual Help, and a St. Clare of Assisi prayer card (given to me by a priest friend) in my wallet.

What prayers and stories do you want to read or know next?

I want to learn about the life and Litany of St. Joseph, and St. Therese of Lisieux (I already bought the books, but haven’t started reading, yet). I also want to read and learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe, The Immaculate Heart of Mary, and many more.
